a loaf of bread

every morning at 7, i walk 3 blocks up the hill to the village center to buy a brown loaf of fresh baked bread. every thursday the fruit & vegetable man sets up his stall in the street. the breads, vegetables, fruits, pastries and cheeses are the best we’ve had. life is gentle, slow. friendly cats in the lanes with a mixed lot of friendly and suspicious dogs. the village lanes are narrow, crooked, old. the villagers friendly. the sun shines more often than not - and when it does, the temperature is in the mid-60s or above. the church chimes the hour, and then chimes it again three minutes later for those who forgot to count. the land consists of rolling stretches of vari-colored vineyards interspersed with hills large and small. on top of each hill is an ancient village with a church tower occupying the highest ground. the grape vines look like little deformed crucified aliens, rows upon thousands of rows of them. it’s all very beautiful, peaceful, serene. it’s also domesticated, groomed, tamed. i like it here, but feel this is an inbetween place. i’m eager for morocco, the marrakesh express in 5 weeks.

we went bicycling today, our 3rd journey in 4 days - and our 2nd flat tire. this time hers went flat in the country with no angels of mercy appearing to help. either the repair kit or the mechanical moron who used the repair kit didn’t work as advertised, so the best we could do was turn the flat into a slow leak… had to pump it up 3 times to get back home.

Bio of Steven B. Smith

I’ve traveled an odd and variegated journey since being born in the Bitterroot Mountains in the panhandle of Idaho 61 years ago.

My life boils down to five sets of facts:

1 - I’m Kathy Ireland Smith’s friend, collaborator, companion, and husband.

2 - I’ve been a poet 43 yrs, an artist 42 yrs, the publisher of ArtCrimes 21 yrs, web master of AgentOfChaos.com 5 yrs, and Kathy’s co-blogger on WalkingThinIce.com 1 yr.

3 - I’ve run from the cops 10 times, got away 9.

4 – My job is to show the sheep in the sheep pen there are better ways to live.

5 – I’ve learned there is but one law - Do as you would be done.
