derechos humanos

23″ x 27″ collage & foto by smith
finished my first oaxacan collage, maybe - new art is always a maybe until it ages awhile on the wall.
for background, glued down crumpled newspapers painted with black wash, thin copper corrosion wash, and silver-white wash - then i glued on 28 items. so if anybody ever asks me what it’s all about, i can say about 28 items - plus 4 sheets of newspaper for background crinkle, plus the canvas. . . a 33-piece piece.
it’s more political poster than art painting, but that’s cool. call it Caution - Derechos Humanos. “derechos humanos” means eroding human rights.
o dear - yet another car alarm going off outside. this is the one sound we’ve heard everywhere we’ve traveled past 18 months - except a small, old, hilltop fishing village in croatia and a small, old, hilltop winery village in france.
me: i wonder what people did for irritation before car alarms?
she: they probably hit themselves in the head with hammers.
the other sound we’ve heard everywhere - except cleveland, paris, london - is the day-long crowing of roosters - a much more metaphoric, romantic, poetic pleasure. the alarm makes me think of taking a shotgun to the car, while the rooster makes me dream of morality, betrayal, adventure.
more crowing cock: one attitude we’ve found everywhere is the unjustified self preening of patriarchal society, the shallow self congratulatory bray of the male chauvinist.
