I think maybe I got through today
without making a fool of myself
but you never know
cuz donno who’s watching
what the rules are
how often they change
or who’s in charge
so this may have been a good day
one without too much damage
or not
it depends om who’s running the show
what the script said
who the advertisers are
how much they paid
and the size of the audience
it’s all expectation
versus ejaculation

The day begins
as do you
because if you don’t
where’s the fun?

the memories later on?

East of the Sun, West of the Moon

In wild weather rough and dark
a White Bear peaks through rain
into the window of a poor woodcutter
with too many children to feed
the White Bear asks to buy
the youngest, prettiest girl
for a fortune unended
but she says no
so the father works her guilt
while the Bear returns each night
until she agrees
and rides off on the Bear’s back
to a fine castle of gold and silver
with a magic wishing bell
where on her first night of sleep
the Bear becomes a man who lies beside her
night after night midst luxuries untold
until she becomes homesick
so White Bear takes her back for a visit
after she makes certain promises
which she promptly breaks
and lies about
leading her to discover White Bear of day
is handsome man of night
but in her dishonesty loses him
back to his wicked stepmother
living east of the sun west of the moon
where she cannot follow
but goes looking
people help
loan her horses
give her a golden apple
and a golden comb
and a golden spinning wheel
which she carries to the east wind
who carries her to the west wind
who takes her to the south wind
who bundles her to his brother north wind
who finally gets her there
where an unpretty long-nosed troll princess
is to marry the Bear prince
but our heroine gives the troll
the golden apple in return for one night
with the prince
but troll princess drugs him
and he doesn’t see the girl
so she buys another night with the comb
but again he’s drugged
so a third and final night is purchased
with the golden spinning wheel
and the prince’s friends
tell him of the crying girl in his room
the past two nights
so he doesn’t drink sleep potion
and he and the girl embrace
and plot against the long nosed princess
he’s to marry tomorrow
by creating an impossible task for long nose
which she’ll lose
causing her and her troll mother’s heads
to explode in rage
so our lying deceitful flesh bartering couple
can live happily ever after
with a White Bear rug on the floor
giving us this story of
buying children, sleeping with them
breaking promises and lying about it
and girls selling nights to their betrothed
with the liars winning happy ever after
which in these days
is pretty good stuff to teach your children
to survive in the real world where
the forked-tongued, the rich
and the two-faced rule

Sage Smoke

Standing with the Cleveland Native Americans
who are standing with Standing Rock
the sage smoke circle ends
with Blossom saying
“Give your thanks your way”

I nod to the green of the trees
the blue of the sky
then down to the clover on the ground
and the honey bee caressing it.

I am thankful.

Hours later the sage smoke
is replaced by a bee smoker
fired with cedar chips
small twigs
and a sumac seed cluster
as we inspect our hive.

Again, I am thankful.

Splatter rain falls
from thunder sky
in whoosh of wind
as lightning flies

And with this next poem, I’m caught up on the October poem-a-day Mary R. Weems, Wendy Shaffer, Celeste McCarty, Lady K, and I are engaged in (suggested by Mary).

It’s been a rough slog this month, the words and poems don’t want to come.

Philosophy 102

I find no answers
crunching through questions
to light this dark

Skin, size, shape, sex
merely starting point
not basic value

And I cannot understand
the indifference
money brings to the rich

But there are clues
the eyes
the look in, the see behind

And of course
there’s say
versus do

But basically
seems to be
mostly me versus you

Black Ice

Late January
coming back from Snoetry 5
a 12-hour reading in Erie
three lady poets in the car
me driving
sun down
liquid ice falling from the sky
we enter 90 West to Cleveland
going 45 in a 70 zone
see two-car crash
and flashing lights ahead
I hit the brakes
the tires stop
the car doesn’t
we slide at same speed
silent on black ice
straight for crashed car
two backseat poets screaming
front seat poet talking serious
me thinking it’s simply too cold
and too far from Cleveland to crash
I slow turn the wheel to the right
and we gently slide right
just past the rear of the crash car
the screaming stops in amazement
but now we’re heading for the cop car
its top lights flashing NO NO
I gently turn the wheel left
and we slow slide left
between the front of the crashed car
and the rear of the police car
and go on down the road
in complete silence
ecstatic

~

Conversation with Wife 29

Do you want a cashew cookie?
“No”
Do you want a pecan cookie?
“No”
Do you want one of both?
“NO, I’m dieting. You’re the devil”
Hey, you live with me, that’s what you get.
Want ice cream?
“No.”
How about a beer?
“NO!”
Some fried cat?
“Only if she’s breaded.”
Sorry, can’t breed her, she’s sterile.

“Nobody likes turnips.”
Why do we grow so many?
“In case there’s a war
so we’ll have something to eat.”
I was in a war once, Word War One
we had word rationing
could only use two verbs a day
and one gerund.

I aster but she wouldn’t answer.

What are you doing?
“Whatever I want.”
How come you get to do whatever you want?
“Because I’m the lady.”
And what’s the guy get to do?
“Whatever the lady wants.”
