The Occupy Cleveland legal folk really need to check this out because according to this 2000 court case, Cleveland is depriving us of our civil rights and freedom of speech and is in violation of the law.

Whoa. Went down this morning to give the occupiers hot cocoa. Everything’s been cleared away. Here’s yesterday’s scene

Last night’s Memorial for Robert Dick Head Ritchie in the park was special. Blog it tomorrow.
There will be a memorial to Robert “Dick Head” Ritchie tonight at 7:30pm in Lincoln Park, Tremont (aka the closest West Side neighborhood to downtown Cleveland, Ohio).
This afternoon we’ll be down on Public Square supporting the upcoming possible troubles for the Occupy Cleveland occupiers. Their protest permit allowing camping on Public Square runs out at 6am tomorrow morning.
But trouble could start tonight at 10pm because that’s when Cleveland’s downtown 10pm curfew goes into effect. The curfew seems illegal to me; just how does a politician decide that the citizens they represent are not allowed to be in their own public park after certain times?
Anyway. It is my understanding Cleveland has decided NOT to renew the protesters’ camping permit. From what I heard at last night’s meeting, it appears Huntington Bank, which is paying for the Public Square Christmas light displays, doesn’t want the dirty protesters to mess up their pretty light display and maybe scare away the visiting suburbanites and out-of-town tourists. Seems to me for the sake of not displeasing a Corporation, city council will deny its citizens their legal right to protest.
Some of the protesters may not be leaving. Don’t ask me which ones because I don’t know. That is between them and their conscience. If I were not achy and creaky in my bones and married with cat, I would be down there myself being civilly disobedient.
So folk, we REALLY need your support today. Starting at 1pm there’ll be a music and speechifying party celebration down in Public Square. Everyone who shows up will be one more person City Council, the Mayor and Huntington Bank will have to factor into their decisions.
If you wish to be most effective as a civilian people shield, show up at 10pm tonight when the curfew runs out and/or 6am tomorrow morning when the protest camp permit expires.
The city is threatening to confiscate their tents and possessions tomorrow morning unless we the people speak out now and loudly. You can also call your city council person and Mayor Jackson as well to let them know you want our government to reflect the will of the people and their Constitutional right to protest the actions of their government.
There is a bit of good news. The Old Stone Church, the oldest building on Public Square, has a long history of siding against social injustice and has offered to let the protesters occupy their church if the cops kick them out of Public Square.
Have no idea what’s going to happen. We’ll find out when we take tomorrow morning’s food down to them and see if they’re still there. Can’t be with them tonight because I’ve got to give Robert’s eulogy in the park.
We need to occupy people’s minds as well as our cities.
The Occupy Cleveland people ran out of water and propane last night and are low on food and need donations this morning.
They also need access to an industrial drier because all their clothes and blankets are somewhere between damp and wet.
They have 3 large canisters of propane but need some sort of hose coupling that would let them refill the small canisters from the large ones, if anyone has one.
And of course they need blankets, warm clothes.
Any little thing you drop off is really appreciated because it lets them know those not occupying appreciate what those that are doing.
They’re occupying for themselves, their own needs, but they are also occupying for us, because we’re all getting screwed by the powers that be — the Corporations.
Here’s their official NEEDS list:

This ain’t no picnic. The Occupy Cleveland clan are sleeping out in the rain on hard cold concrete.
Lady baked a dozen potatoes, cut them in half, added butter, then boiled a couple pitchers of water for us to take down to the occupiers this morning. While we were there, a businessman in a suit on the way to work stopped and gave them a large tarp to protect from rain and cold. There have been a lot of donations. The non-protesting public appears to be supporting us. A poll from yesterday reported 53% of the US population support the Occupy America efforts, with another 20% unaware of what’s going on, which leaves only around 25% of the country playing Scrooge.
The Cleveland police seem to be mostly supportive too. Wednesday night as the rains came, one protester put up a tent. The police told him to take it down. He refused. The cops came in and took the tent down without arresting him. After they left, he put it back up. Later on the police drove by and when they saw the tent back up, gave him the thumbs up sign and kept driving. Then everyone started erecting tents and rain shelters. All the structures you see in these fotos are technically illegal, but at least so far the authorities seem to be looking the other way.
Several local unions are also holding meetings to vote on supporting us.
Both the board of directors of Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream and Fed Up USA (one of the founding groups of the Tea Party) announced they support the Cleveland occupiers, so we have backing from both the left and the right.
On the darker side nationally, in Boston two hundred state and local police surrounded the second Occupy Boston camp, tore it down and harshly beat some of the non-violent protesters. Dallas Texas says they’re revoking the Occupy Dallas protest permits and shutting down the camps. And in New York City there’s been a rash of incidents of police pepper spraying and clubbing non-violent non-resisting protesters, with at least three instances caught on fone-cams which can be viewed on YouTube.
It’s not going to do them any good because at least 68 US cities are being occupied: Albuquerque, NM – Allentown, PA – Athens, GA – Atlanta, GA – Asheville, NC – Austin, TX – Baltimore, MD – Boston, MA – Buffalo, NY – Burlington, VT – Berkeley, CA – Charlotte, NC – Chattanooga, TN – Chicago, IL – Cincinnati, OH – Cleveland, OH – Colorado Springs, CO – Dallas, TX – Dayton, OH – Denver, CO – Elkhart, IN – Eureka, CA – Findlay, OH – Flagstaff, AZ – Grand Rapids, MI – Honolulu, HI – Houston, TX – Idaho Falls, ID – Indianapolis, IN – Inland Empire, CA – Ithaca, NY – Jacksonville, FL – Kansas City, MO – Lexington, KY – Lawrence, KS – Los Angeles, CA – Las Vegas, NV – Louisville, KY – Madison, WI – Maui, HI – Miami, FL – Minneapolis, MN – Missoula, MT – McAllen, TX – Nashville, TN – New York City, NY – Norfolk, VA – Northampton, MA – Ocala, FL – Philadelphia, PA – Portland, ME – Portland, OR – Riverside, CA – Salt Lake City, UT – San Diego, CA – San Jose, CA – San Francisco, CA – Santa Fe, NM – Sarasota, FL – Seattle, WA – St. Louis, MO – South Bend, IN – Syracuse, NY – Tampa, FL – Trenton, NJ – Washing D.C. – Wichita, KS – Winston-Salem, NC.
Plus I believe somewhere between 600 and 800 cities around the world are currently being occupied by their citizens. This is a watershed moment for planet Earth – the poor folk who outnumber the rich are finally putting their foot down saying enough damage to Mother Earth, enough stealing from us.

And finally, here’s an encouraging news item about the occupiers getting the approval of the Cleveland City Council:
#OccupyCleveland occupied the hallowed chambers of City Hall this evening. Personally invited by Councilman Brian Cummins of Ward 14, members of the group received a tour of the grounds and sat in on a City Council meeting that turned out to be mainly about them. The group received a rousing round of applause, as well as the endorsements of many key Council members.
Councilman Cummins made sure to highlight the group’s excellent working relationship with the Cleveland Police Department and its relentless commitment to the consensus process. Councilman Jay Westbrook of Ward 16 expressed his delight to see such a diverse group engaging in their First Amendment rights. Councilwoman Mamie Mitchell of Ward 6 said that she is inspired by the way the movement is engaging in democracy. Councilman Zach Reed of Ward 2 stressed that Cleveland is an important place to see this movement prosper. He was especially impressed with #OccupyCleveland’s steadfast dedication to nonviolence and peaceable assembly.
Mayor Frank Jackson was also in attendance, seen shaking hands and smiling for #OccupyCleveland’s live feed of the event. The group later received endorsements from Council President Martin Sweeney of Ward 18, Councilman Matt Zone of Ward 15 and Councilman Joe Cimperman of Ward 3. All in all, City Hall seemed pretty excited. One Councilman was even heard singing John Lennon’s “Power to the People” in the hallways after the meeting.
The trumpet of support sounding from City Hall could not come at a more crucial moment for Clevelanders taking part in #OccupyCleveland. The Soldiers and Sailors Monument Commission meets Wednesday morning to discuss whether to grant #OccupyCleveland permission to set up camp on the monument’s quadrant of Public Square. With any luck, the backing of City Hall will work in the group’s favor.
#OccupyCleveland’s current camp leaves them vulnerable to poor weather conditions. Forecasters expect the recent spate of pleasant weather to come to an end sometime around mid-week. The demonstrators hope to set up more substantial shelter before the cold and rain make their presence felt. Despite the group’s excellent track record of cleanliness and nonviolence, they are concerned about the long-term health and safety of their members. A more favorable location would go a long way toward ensuring their well-being. Most importantly, it would afford #OccupyCleveland room for the growth necessary to sustain a movement for positive social change.
The Occupy Cleveland occupiers’ area – fotos by Smith
Over the weekend, Occupy Cleveland put out a call for blankets, pillows, and cardboard because the concrete sidewalk they’re sleeping on gets cold and hard at night, so Lady made them a pot of black bean soup yesterday and we took down a few pillows, blankets, sweaters, and cardboard and got a big hug from Liberty in return (the guy in the camouflage coat and V for Vendetta mask 3rd foto from bottom).
The 31 occupiers from Thursday night grew to 62 occupiers Saturday night, then shrank to the hardcore 31 last night, who say they’re there for the long haul. They are dug in, well supported, cheerful, and non-violent.
Lady brought them a pitcher of hot cocoa this morning and we got another hug from Liberty, who seems to be running the occupation portion.
Erin (in the foto below with Liberty) said they need small tents, canvas, tarps, anything to protect them from the on-coming rain. I asked if that were legal and she said the police are being friendly, talking with them and treating them nicely, even trying to help with their marches and all if they have the man power, so the occupiers are not worried about being hassled for small anti-rain structures under 10′ x 10′.
Yesterday the number of people listening to the music and speeches seems to have grown. So now we just have to wait to see what happens as the novelty wears off, the weather worsens, the legal protest permits run out, and the authorities get snitty (as authorities sometimes do when questioned). Occupy Cleveland is trying to extend their permits, but are planning on staying no matter what.
This is a reposting of information compiled by ironboltbruce (he said anyone can repost). He’s mentioned this list of 15 issues that the Occupy Movement has created and has had a creative, personalized take on each of the issues. Am very glad to see this kind of thinking and would like us to think locally in addition to nationally and globally. So I’d like to create my own take on the issues following his example (coming soon). But meanwhile, here’s what he’s said:
The steering committee of the “October 2011 Movement” – the patriots presently occupying Freedom Plaza in Washington DC – published a summary of the 15 issues which are the focus of their protest here:
ISSUE #1. “Corporatism – firmly establish that money is not speech, corporations are not people, only people have Constitutional rights, end corporate influence over the political process, protect people and the environment from damage by corporations.”
ISSUE #2. “Wars and Militarism – end wars and occupations, end private for-profit military contractors, reduce the national security state and end the weapons export industry. War crimes, crimes against humanity and crimes against peace must be addressed and those responsible held accountable under international law.”
ISSUE #3. “Human Rights – end exploitation of people in the US and abroad, end discrimination in all forms, equal civil rights and due process for all people.”
ISSUE #4. “Worker Rights and jobs – all working-age people have the right to safe, just, non-discriminatory and dignified working conditions, a sustainable living wage, paid leave and economic protection.”
ISSUE #5. “Government – all processes of the three branches of government should be accountable to international law, transparent and follow the rule of law, people have the right to participate in decisions which affect them.”
ISSUE #6. “Elections – all citizens 18 and older have the right to vote without barriers, all candidates have the right to be heard and to run and all votes should be counted.”
ISSUE #7. “Criminal justice and prisons – end private for-profit prisons, adopt evidence-based drug policy, prisoners have the right to humane and just conditions with a focus on rehabilitation and reintegration into society, abolish the death penalty.”
ISSUE #9. “Education – all people have the right to a high quality, publicly-funded and broad education from pre-school through vocational training or university.”
ISSUE #11. “Environment – adopt policies which effectively create a carbon-free and radio-active free energy economy and that respects the rights of nature.”
ISSUE #12. “Finance and the economy – end policies which foster a wealth divide and move to a localized and democratic financial system, reform taxes so that they are progressive and provide goods, monetary gain and services for the people.”
