WALKING ON THIN ICE

May 8, 2016 Lady Poem

Slim Whitman sings Song of the Wild,
steel guitar runs threads of a barline
through a country diorama

I never thought I’d like cowboys
but I find myself doing just that – floral
embroidery on shirts, a recognition
of wistful male sweetness

A torn out paper collage
moon and mountains and wisps
of paper cloud, cowboy, hat and horse
cows, mesas, water
campfire stars

Oh my dear horse, why not enjoy
the bright moon and light breeze
while you can?

Lady Poem May 11, 2015

Thuvian throatsong, patter of Cherokee drums,
congregation of tents, comfortable nests of campfire
communities, dogs settled in the dirt thumping tails
once in a while, watching, trusting, us on our beat-up
old couch surrounded by third floor art–so many centers
of the world in their own sweet ways
so thankful

Lady Poem May 8, 2015

Held on a leash in life’s lease,
the buttresses of relaxation we hurriedly make
outside bookends of workdays for the great big
blue-green-tan-white panorama
of Nature

Beneath sky blue or
the wrinkled brow of clouds’ introspection
I want to walk, walk in and under and marvel
on this marble of planet

Longer stays in the knit of what matters

Idylls of Heaven on Earth
and Heaven in Heaven

Be fain to leap
from comfortable sludge
of warm pajamas to gymnopédies
of beginner’s mind like a monk taking
three breaths, saying a gatha,
and getting out of bed

A long draught of water
fresh as the splash of a harp,
clean cotton, naked feet on the floor,
koto music and meditation,
sunrise Éthiopiques for
the new day

Finch
short shuffling inching,
hopping forward on dappled perch,
ebullient warble projected at the hen
of his affection

She flirtatiously tilts
a long blade of grass from her beak,
head tipped just so, still,
listens

From his puffed up chest
arias of moonlit skies
and paradise

He fixed his face
in work’s intense solemnity
cornerstone chinking into place
humming build your love, build your love,
build your love on a strong foundation

Birthing something new
from the gristle and grind of his hands’
and mind’s labors, transcendent cadenzas
shining on facets of transfigurations
red carpets popping out like tongues
from advent boxes, discoveries
of inner maiden voyages

Curlicues of boogie woogie mugwort dreams
eddies from the white buffalo pipe pooling
into wintergreen calm of yellow birchbark,
living breath of the Great Grandfather
Mystery, the present of the Wild White
Buffalo Woman

The pipe circles around hand offering to hand
for the songs of the four directions, White North,
Morning Star East, South Wind, Sunset West

Keen beauty of traditions indigenous to this land–
can we find them again?

Get away from our empty ghosts
of oblivious disregard

Some thoughts
I believe

Life and love, what a wonderful world
we can return to paradise in, finding
secret zen gardens of woodland reservations
streamers of cosmic rays gilding openings
of green, saplings sprouting under the tall
dark elephant legs of their mature parents

Walking along sweet creek waters,
slight dashings of wakerobins–woodland
spring bloomers–in the enlivened humus
of earth, the peter peter peter of tufted titmice
flocking with chickadees, nuthatches &
thuddy knockings of woodpeckers like
faint Cherokee pow wow drums

Bees on their sweet trips to and from the hives
impossible to valuate, to place a ceiling on their lives
in terms of how important they are to us, to fruiting plants,
to animals, to life–their impact like looking in a room
with mirrored walls both rippling forever into distant
realms, and to the immediate

Heaven can be here on earth
like Helen Keller and her farouche hands
finding meaning in the tap
