fair Lady with blueberry pie

Lady song sings
“Two pies have I,
one to enter, one to try,
one to eat, one to send
to the judge in hope of win,
so let’s pick, let’s begin.”

My fair Lady is now a fair fair lady having entered her first pie in the Cuyahoga County Fair, a blueberry whose berries we picked in Lodi last weekend, our second picking in Lodi lately. (I can still faintly hear the Blueberry Clearjuice Revival singing “Oh Lord, plucked in Lodi again.”)

She’s been test baking pies for months now (and I’ve valiantly been test tasting them for her), but last night she tried to solve two new problems while making her entry pie — her crusts had become hard since she’d been using whole wheat flour, and the blueberries had souped up. So she baked two pies last night, one with the berries mashed and the juiced boiled and thickened with roux, and one with whole berries with added flour for thickness, both with new crusts from all-white flour and local butter.

Dropped fair pie off, took second pie over to Chiplis’ to test drive – tasted real good, but crust was hard. Drove back to fair to pick up pie. Judge looked at pie in my hand and said, “Strange crust.”

Lady won 3rd place, gets ribbon and $2.

Brought pie home. Is delicious. Crust rather stern. Will keep testing till evidence is gone in scientific feedback.
