new Lady poem . . .
The heron flies high. Does he notice?
Do we glance like an editor?
A shadow is never cast in the sky itself.
But of our inward glance?
A robot thinks “The woman’s head
does not turn right”
I tell them it should turn right
when the heron passes right.
The robot is late; The woman’s head
does not turn right
as it should
when the heron passes right.
A shadow is not cast against the sky
like a bowl like a brainpan.
I have to show this to the robot
who shows it to the bird,
whose shadow does not know.
A shadow is not cast against the sky
even before the bird
flies on the boardwalk.
Sometimes I know these things
when I think them.
A robot thinks but doesn’t know
or so I think.
After a beat they say:
“The shadow is now confined to the deck
and disappears before the close ascent.
The woman’s rightward gaze
now tracks the heron.”
Will the robot ever know?
I tell them very nice job.
