Water leak from ceiling started last Friday.
Called Roto Rooter, they came out, checked things out, turned off water, said they’d be back Monday to fix. Called Monday, no call back; called Tuesday and Wednesday, no call-back; called this morning and asked for a supervisor – he works in a national call center, so connected me with our local R.R. who had our initial plumber call me, he explained there were delays he had told the office to tell me about, but they never called. So I cancelled R.R. and called the local Jack’s Plumbing. They were here in 30 minutes, took 2 hours, fixed the problem.
While they were here, the garbage disposal decided not to turn on, so we had 2 plumbers and 1 electrician prowling this 143 yr-old house.
Plumbers sawed through walls and ceiling so repair work needs to be done after the drying-out.
Money money money . . . 2.5 yrs here = rewiring old fuses in basement to circuit box, new toilet, new tub, solar panels, new roof and termite control for 3-car garage, 10 new windows — plus buncha other money-eatings weed-brain has lost.
Being 27 years older than The Wife, this was to be my retirement home . . . now think it’s more a money coffin. Thank goodness she’s bringing bread in. In Oaxaca Mexico 2007-9 my social security covered everything with funds left over; up here, maybe cover food and mortgage.
But we love the place. Built 1880, last house on the left on a red-brick one-block dead-end street overlooking Zoo parking lot — sometimes at night we hear elephants trumpeting.
And this morning in our backyard pine tree I heard an owl go ::hoo hoo hoo-hoot, hoo hoo hoo-hooo:: often enough I had time to look up and see it moving – 3rd owl I’ve seen here . . . along with groundhogs, skunks, turkey vultures, deer, coyotes, raccoons, snakes.
And, if we’re talking beasts, me.
