In the mind mess of upcoming loss of one neckbone, car being hit in side, and MandyCat dying, I forgot to post my December 23rd feature in Medusa’s Kitchen – check out 9 poems, 9 fotos, and 1 fine unChristmas song at http://medusaskitchen.blogspot.com/2016/12/news-from-great-gauze.html

More poems coming because Mary E. Weems, Wendy Shaffer, Celeste McCarty, Lady K, Adam Brodsky, and myself are writing a poem-a-day through Januweary.

Knock on Would

I want one thousand furry cat tails
swishing happy against my skin
as I’m soothed with the rumble
of one thousand purrs
and held captive as I gaze
into two thousand eyes
green grey orange snake
weighing me for friend or snack

I look to the cat
see if her abdomen still moves with breath.

She is not here, yet not there,
my heart, hurt, hung between.

Never killed someone I loved before.

We euthanized MandyCat yesterday. Should have been a day earlier because she was suffering, but I didn’t know enough to make the right decision.

I knelt down to her level, held her paw, looked her in the eye and told her it was okay. She looked me back in the eye trustingly until the medicine hit her and she looked away, surprised.

Now just this huge emptiness left in our lives and our apartment – a rather large emptiness for such a small creature.

She lived her first 7 years with poet/cat lady Wendy Shaffer, her last 8 years with us.
